The Jungle Place, or “kuxi k’aax” in the Mayan language, is a 20 acre natural paradise in the jungle of the Riviera Maya located about one hour south of Cancun, between Akumal and Tulum.
This project is a labor of love for Heidi and Joel who work tirelessly, 24/7 to care for 17 spider monkeys. Currently, there is a waiting list for 17 more animals, but space and resources are limited. The sanctuary runs on donations, monies paid by visitors to interact with the animals and rental income from a few bungalows on the property. Stacey(doglovers) The Jungle Place: We found out about a spider monkey sanctuary that is very close to Tulum, so I emailed Heidi at The Jungle Place to see if she could accommodate us one of the days we were there. We arranged for a taxi to take us there and I must admit, it’s not easy to find. Once we got there, we spent over an hour with these wonderful animals. Heidi and Joel have 17 monkeys, two of which are babies. You only interact with the female monkeys, as the male monkeys have fangs. Quite frightening actually! I would highly recommend this excursion. Joel and Heidi are wonderful people and the location of their home and where the monkey’s live is breathtaking. If you want to give something different a try, check out our photos and visit The Jungle Place. You won’t regret it.
