Snorkeling

Snorkel Map

These GREEN areas outlined above have resulted in some of the best snorkeling we have found at this resort.

We found Lobster, Octopus, Brittle Stars, Eels and Barracuda just to name a few. Needless to say, you will also enjoy the endless species of fish to be found here. The best time to snorkel will be in the mornings when the tide is low and the water is quiet. About 11am is usually when the jet skiers and late sleepers decide to find their way to the area and the water becomes less clear. Afternoons can be murky when the sand decides to kick up depending on the currents.

The YELLOW areas are rather shallow and you will risk some scrapes and cuts if you decide to venture into these shallow waters without a plan on how you will get out. I would strongly suggest a fully inflated snorkeling vest (to keep you well above the coral) if you plan on going into these areas. Many areas here (and also in the green areas) have a wealth of fish and sea life very close to the surface, which is well lit by the Sun in the afternoon. These areas are great for taking underwater pictures of your newest marine friends.

The RED areas are where you will find our old friend the Spiny Sea Urchin and, the West Indies Sea Egg. You will find them all around. Common sense is the rule here. If your NOT going to wear water shoes or flippers in this area, you risk stepping on them, and it is not very pleasant. They pose little risk to normal snorkelers, who know to leave them alone, and not step down without knowing what is below you.

The coral here is wondrous to explore. There are a few underwater caves to the left (west) side (further up past the green area) you can also explore. Once you reach the block wall there is really not too much to see past that.

Compliments of Becky
